Program Overview

The Arts and Humanities Summer Institute (AHSI) provides highly motivated students entering their junior or senior year of an undergraduate degree program with a unique opportunity to explore their interests in pursuing graduate studies in the humanities. AHSI targets students from historically underrepresented groups who will be rising juniors or seniors in the Summer 2010. Students participate in seminars designed to strengthen their conceptual and methodological approaches to scholarship in the humanities, develop an original research project with guidance from a faculty mentor, and present their findings at a public research symposium at the end of the Institute.

The rigorous four-week program prepares students for graduate-level coursework in the humanities while also giving them opportunities to conduct archival and object-based research at historical societies and research libraries both on campus and in the region (e.g., the University of Delaware Library’s Department of Special Collections, the Hagley Museum and Library, the Library Company of Philadelphia, and the Winterthur Museum and Library).

AHSI participants meet current graduate students, the directors of graduate programs in the humanities, and representatives from the Office of Graduate and Professional Education to ensure that they are well informed about funding opportunities, application procedures for graduate study, and career opportunities in humanities education and research. They also have opportunities to work with undergraduates enrolled in other summer programs on campus (e.g., McNair Scholars and Undergraduate Research Fellows).

Participants are selected through a competitive application process and receive a $2000 stipend; housing, transportation to and from the University of Delaware, and course materials are covered by the program.
