Interdepartmental Major The Interdepartmental Major is a Bachelor of Arts degree option offered by the College of Arts and Sciences. The major program requires the approval of two separate department Chairpersons and the Dean’s Office. It differs from a double major in that it does not require the student to complete every one of the major requirements for two majors, as listed in the Catalog. The Interdepartmental Major consists of a minimum of 21 credits from each of two departments and a minimum of 9 additional credits of related work which can be from either of the two departments or from different discipline areas, as approved by the two department Chairpersons. The total credits for the Interdepartmental Major is, thus, at least 51. It is similar to a Double Major in that it allows a student to pursue two areas of study. It is different from a Double Major in that it could require few total credits from the major departments. It also differs from a double major in that it allows the student to pursue majors from two different Colleges at the University as long as the approval of the two Chairpersons and the Dean’s Office, College of Arts and Sciences, is granted.
